Revision Rhinoplasty

What is Revision Rhinoplasty?

Revision rhinoplasty is a specialized procedure that repairs or improves the results of an initial surgery. Patients need revision rhinoplasty surgery due to the remaining cosmetic problems to correct, such as saddle nose deformity, polly beak deformity, or a pinched nasal tip. Functional issues can also result from a poorly performed nose jo, such as nasal blockage or trouble breathing. Regardless of the surgical experience of the surgeon or success of the operation, problems may occur in terms of the healing process due to the special and unique anatomy features of each nose. Thus, rhinoplasty is a highly complex surgical procedure.

Revision rhinoplasty is a very specialized surgical procedure among the nose surgeries. The nasal infrastructure (bone components and cartilage) have been altered during the first operation. Therefore, different approaches are needed in revision rhinoplasty.

The level of difficulty for revision rhinoplasty can vary. In some cases, only minor touches are needed in revision surgery, like the correction of tip asymmetries, or the asymmetries between nostril holes. On the other hand, some revision rhinoplasty might be highly complex and difficult to perform due to problems like scaring on the skin, saddle nose deformity, etc.

Revision rhinoplasty can successfully correct previous poorly performed nose surgeries. Dr. Enis’s extensive experience gives him the ability to create results that are tailored directly to the unique needs and concerns of his patients.

How is Revision Rhinoplasty Performed?

First through examination the surgeon must determine the problems which caused the first operation to be unsuccessful. After outlining the problems, Dr. Enis will inform you about available options.

The extent of revision rhinoplasty surgery can vary. If overall you are satisfied with the results of the first operation, but only slightly unhappy only with few or small feature, this may be corrected with minor revisions. If problems or deformities of nose are complex, patients need a more complex revision rhinoplasty or a major revision. Minor revision surgery duration is typically 1-1.5 hours as where major revisions surgeries can be around 3-6 hours.

A major difference in revision rhinoplasty surgery is the lack of cartilage reserve in the nose due to the first operation. The surgeon may need to utilize rib, ear, or donor cartilage to correct the nose. Revision rhinoplasty procedure often coincides with rib cartilage harvesting surgery.

Why is Revision Rhinoplasty needed?

Revision rhinoplasty is needed due to many reasons with the most frequent being;

  • Functional problems: After first nose operation, sometimes the patient can have severe breathing problems caused by issues within the nostrils, cartilage roof, or septum cartilage. If the patient experiences sever breathing problems, there is generally both functional and aesthetic problems.
  • Appearance problems: A natural looking result is highly desired by most patient who undergo rhinoplasty, but sometimes the result may not be natural looking enough. Revision rhinoplasty surgery is performed in patient who desire a more natural looking nose. Dr. E. Ekincioglu is highly qualified and trained to obtain the best natural looking result in revision rhinoplasty surgery.
  • Other problems: Absence of skin, bone or cartilage after first rhinoplasty might be seen in some cases. These problems are extremely difficult to correct unfortunately.

When should Revision Rhinoplasty be done?

Revision Rhinoplasty is performed when undesired appearance or breathing problem exist following first operation. These problems are corrected with revision rhinoplasty operation which is performed under general anesthesia. A few problems may be corrected under local anesthesia, but this option is only suitable for select problem. Healing from rhinoplasty surgery can take up to 12 months. Therefore, revision rhinoplasty must only be considered once the patient is at least 12 months post operation.
